Social justice fight back

At Maurice Blackburn, we believe all people in Australia should have access to the law and be able to fight back. We understand that sometimes people can't afford to pay, and legal access can be difficult. That's why we provide free legal advice in cases that are in

the public interest. Our pro bono work in Victoria focuses on civil, political and human rights law, asylum seekers rights, environment and climate change, workplace rights, and Indigenous rights and equality. Some of our current human rights law cases

include opposition to a nuclear waste dump at Muckaty Station in the Northern Territory, and challenging the right to own human gene patents. Fight back - contact Maurice Blackburn Lawyers.

Your questions about fees and charges

Do you charge for human rights work?

If your case meets our criteria, our social justice legal services in Victoria are provided at no cost to you. Much of our legal work in other practice areas is 'no win, no fee', enabling more people access to the law.

Who does the social justice work?

All Maurice Blackburn lawyers have the opportunity to be involved in social justice work. Lawyers often come from several practice areas throughout Victoria and the rest of the firm to form a team to work on a case. They are overseen by a Principal and our Social Justice Committee.

Is this the same as pro bono?

Yes. However you term it, we offer our social justice legal service free in the public interest. The barristers we work with through our Social Justice Practice also often volunteer their time.

How do you choose who gets free legal representation?

Maurice Blackburn's Social Justice Committee oversees applications for our pro bono work. Each case is assessed on its merit, and the outcome must be in the public interest - ie it must benefit people beyond those people taking part in the legal action.
