Maurice Blackburn Fight Back

Before you turn, take a longer look
When it comes to road safety, it's not just down to motorcyclists, it's up to everyone. This is the message behind a new tv ad, produced by motorcyclists, with motorcyclists, for all road users.
Riders around Australia have funded the 30-second tv ad production through the sale of Stop SMIDSY t-shirts provided by Maurice Blackburn, plus services largely volunteered by creative agency Gozer, run by riders.
The ad, which is to air on Foxtel in October, features Australian Superbike Championship rider Bron Sorensen urging drivers to take a longer look before they turn.
Statistics indicate that in 84 per cent of motorcyclist fatalities, where drivers turned into or across the path of the motorcycle, it was the driver, rather than the motorcyclist, who was at fault.
The ad voices concerns raised by many motorcyclists on our Stop SMIDSY facebook page and in other consultation, and is supported by Maurice Blackburn and Motorcycling Australia.
I congratulate everyone involved in the ad. As thousands of riders from around the country descend on Phillip Island for the 2012 Moto GP, drivers should be especially aware of motorcyclists sharing the road.
This ad advances driver education in an attempt to make our roads safer, and is part of a range of initiatives Maurice Blackburn has supported through its dedicated Lawyers4Riders, including rider representation, lobbying for legislative change, and raising driver awareness.
